How To Not Be A Grouchy Old Man

By Anju Mathur, M.D.

Do you wish your father (mother, brother, sister, friend, or even self) weren't so grouchy? Often people expect and allow elderly people to be grouchy. They don't like change and they don't like all that energy that kids spread around.

But often some of us feel a little grouchiness creep in when we aren't even elderly. It can begin at middle age or even before. Are we just too beat up by life and the world?

Is it a natural experience of getting older? Medicine classifies irritability as a symptom of many diseases and conditions, both physical and psychiatric. Maybe you're "depressed" or maybe you have meningitis. Maybe your body clock isn't operating as it should.

The cures are as varied as the diagnoses. Of course the psychiatrists would like you to think it is all in your mind, so they can prescribe drugs and make a lot of money. Psychiatric drugs have horrendous side effects and rarely do any good. The cure is worse than the condition you began with.

Other cures for grouchiness might do a bit of good if you can do them. Keep your mind on the positive. Think good thoughts. Get lots of exercise. Reconnect with your divine essence. Get more sleep. There are many more remedies.

But increasing grouchiness as we age is most likely a physical condition having to do with the lowered levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Levels of serotonin decrease as we age. This chemical actually affects mood.

Serotonin is a chemical and a lack of it can make one feel depressed. It is naturally produced by the body, but since production decreases as one ages, it needs to be replenished. St. John's wort, SAMe and 5-HIP are natural supplements which can increase the body's production of serotonin. As a bonus, since serotonin relates to perception of pain, pain will decrease as serotonin increases.

Also, food allergies may begin later in life and cause irritability. Even if you do not have a particular food allergy, there are certain kinds of foods that cause grouchiness, and other foods that alleviate it. In addition to causing irritability, refined foods, foods high in saturated fats and refined vegetable oils will also increase pain. Slow-burning carbohydrates (fiber) will give your body more energy, whereas refined carbohydrates will make matters worse. How you feel is very closely related to what you eat.

A cheerful outlook on life is not restricted to the young. A well trained doctor can help you alleviate the physical causes of grouchiness and provide real natural help. - 30246
