Why Should Mice And Millions Of Women Consider Using A Natural Moisturiser?

By Peter Albertonach

There are excellent reasons why mice and millions of American women should be using natural moisturisers.

Recently a study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. In this study scientists were interested to find out if caffeine could cause cancer in mice. As a part of the study each mouse had a moisturiser applied to it's skin 5 times a day for 17 weeks.

The scientists were very surprised when they came to a conclusion that was not what was expected. The conclusion was that applying these moisturisers to the skin of the mice "increased the total number of histologically characterized tumors by 69%". Or in other words that applying moisturiser to the skin of mice very significantly increase the risk of skin cancer.

So let's look a little closer at this study and find out why so many mice, and millions of women in America who use moisturisers as part of their daily skin care routine should be more seriously considering a natural moisturiser rather than the moisturiser they may use now.

Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin, or Vanicream were the moisturisers applied to the skin of the mice. All of these moisturisers containing sodium lauryl sulphate (SLF) and mineral oil.

Mineral oil is a very common ingredient in many personal products that you may use every day including cosmetics, skin care and anti aging products. It is a petrochemical product which means that it comes from crude oil and it has been linked to various cancers as well as other health problems. The reason mineral oil is used extensively is because it is extremely cheap.

Sodium lauryl sulphate is well known as a common ingredient in many soaps and shampoos and has also been linked to cancer and other health problems as well. For this reason many consumers specifically look for soaps and shampoos that do not contain sodium lauryl sulphate. But many consumers are unaware that other products, such as moisturisers, also contain sodium lauryl sulphate.

The mere fact that these moisturisers increased the risk of skin cancer in the mice by a very significant amount doesn't prove that the mineral oil or the sodium lauryl sulphate caused the skin cancer. Much more serious investigations would need to be undertaken to establish the exact cause, however one more fact should lead you to worry about your moisturiser, and also suggest you that you should be seriously considering using a natural facial moisturiser in the future.

This is the worrying fact. The scientists were very surprised to find the rate of skin cancer in the mice increase as they did, particularly given that this was not what they were studying. So they sourced another moisturiser that was a much more natural moisturiser, and which didn't contain any mineral oil or sodium lauryl sulphate and they redid the study. This time they found no increase in the rate of skin cancer in the mice.

So you can see that there are some worrying conclusions to be drawn from the study, and you can also see why so many American women, as well as mice, might be more seriously considering using natural face moisturisers rather than a moisturiser they may be using now which may well contain sodium lauryl sulphate and mineral oil.

There's hundreds or even thousands of personal products such as skin care products that contain chemical and petrochemical ingredients, many of which are known to have health implications. Some of these ingredients have been shown to cause cancer and may well be found in the moisturiser, as well as well as other skin care products that you may have even used today

There are excellent natural skin care products available, including natural face moisturisers, which do not contain any of these chemical and petrochemical ingredients and which work extremely well.
